Villarrica-Pucon is about 800 kilometers south
of Santiago, accessible by a well maintained paved road and
a dirt access road. The area is on an active volcano. Weather
here is a problem. Chances are some type of precipitation falls
on any given winter day. But when it is sunny, it is gorgeous.
The top lift served elevation is 2080 meters. The base elevation
is 1200 meters. Trails serve all ability levels, and skiers
and snowboarders may choose from many off-piste runs. Villarrica-Pucon
has 9 lifts.
Pucon has no on-mountain motel. Resort guests
stay at the exclusive Grand Hotel Pucon, in Pucon village, a
half hour from the ski lifts. Pucon village has accommodations
at all price levels. A room with a private bathroom can be had
for as low as U.S. $10 a night. Bus transportation from Santiago
to Pucon costs around $10 one way. For a slightly higher price,
travellers may ride the luxury bus that has wider seats.
